Isola Capraia is of volcanic origin; the W coast being steep and barren whereas the E side slopes gradually and is cultivated. A chain of rocky mountains runs parallel to and within 0.6 mile of the W coast, Monte Castello (43°03′0N, 9°48′9E) and Monte Arpagna (43°01′2N, 9°48′4E) are the highest peaks.
