Catania, the second largest city in Sicilia, stands on the edge of a large fertile and intensely cultivated plain overshadowed by Monte Etna. The city has been partially or completely destroyed by eruptions of Monte Etna several times in history; the worst being in 1669 when lava flowed into the sea.
