La Maddalena lies on the S coast of Isola La Maddalena. The commercial port, which fronts the town, gained its importance from the adjacent naval base, at the head of Rada di Santo Stefano, and its proximity to Corse and the Italian mainland. La Maddalena is an important local ferry terminal and has developed as a port of call for cruise vessels.
