Otranto is a small town situated in a bay, close to the E-most point of Italy, 39 miles SSE of Brindisi. It is enclosed on its S side by ramparts. The harbour is suitable for vessels with a draught up to 5. 3 m but is liable to silting. Anchorage may be obtained by small vessels in a position 280 meters WNW of the breakwater head, in depths of about 7 m, good holding ground, but this is exposed to strong N and NW winds. In these conditions vessels are advised to shelter close S of Punta Faci.
