Porto di Piave Vecchia lies at the mouth of Fiume Sile. Fiume Sile, the course of which is tortuous, connects with inland waterways affording communication with Venezia and other places inland. During the winter, sandbanks, which obstruct the whole of the E side of the entrance, are formed by Bora gales. The approach channel is dredged annually to maintain depths of 3. 5 m.
