Sailing Holidays in Anatoliki Mani
East Mani receives many visitors and has plenty of hotels and camping sites. From Trinisa and Selinitsa, Mavrovouni, Kamares to Vathy, Ageranos, and Skoutari, the loveliest beaches in the bay of Laconia are to be found, where the sea turtles find refuge. Cape Tainaro the southernmost point of mainland Europe, also belongs to the Municipality. Its lighthouse was constructed by the French in 1882 in Paris and renovated in 1930.
The tower houses are worth a visit, as well as the Byzantine monuments and the small churches, which are real works of art. There are one-room churches, megalithic ones, two-concha ones and cave churches. Most of them have exquisite frescoes. The local products are of excellent quality (such as, olive oil, prickly pears, cheese, honey and fresh fish).
A little to the south rises the hill of Mavrovounio, where the castle of Goulades stands and to the west the 3km long beach of Mavrovounio stretches winding down to Skoutari. To the south-west of Gythion on a steep, high hill, near the settlement of Marathea, stands the castle of Passavas (13th century) on the site of the ancient town Las. On the pass between Gythion and Itylos there is the settlement of old Karioupoli, with strong Byzantine elements.
The cave of captain Zacharias near the villages of Malevrion, a little after Skoufomiti, belongs to the Municipality, as does the gulf of Pierrakos just before Skyfianika. The European Mountain Route E4 from north Taygetos to Mani goes through the lovely countryside of the municipality, which has several traditional settlements and has been included in a program of mild development.
