The municipality of Xiromero is situated in West Greece in a beautiful landscape combining mountain and sea with traditional coastal and mountainous villages. Astakos is the seat of the municipality located in a road linking Agios Nikolaos and Mesolonghi -slightly east of Aitolikon. In the Byzantine Era, the town was known as Dragamesti. A tiny bay can be found south of Astakos. Alyzia is part of the municipality Xiromero, located on the central west coast of Aetolia-Acarnania, near the island community of Kalamos.

Ancient Alyzia was one of the most important cities in ancient Acarnania. According to Strabo, the city was named after Alyzeus, son of Icarius and brother of Penelope.
