It is one of the most important monuments of Kefalonia. It was built in 19th century and is 8 metres tall. It isOne of the most well known sights known as the Lighthouse of Saint Theodore. It is named after the nearby church, though the whole region is now commonly known as ‘Fanari’ or lighthouse. Like everything else in Argostoli, it was demolished in the earthquakes of 1953 and rebuilt immediately afterwards, together with a precious few architectural gems of the period. The lighthouse has recently been restored to preserve it from extensive saltwater erosion. The lighthouse is the starting point of kayak trips. Route starts from Faros and ends to Minies. There is a 5 miles trip which lasts approximately 5-6 hours. In the first part visitor paddle along a scenic coast full of caves. There is a short break for swimming and fruit in Palaiostafida bay. As passing the crowded beach of Makris Gialos, the scenery changes radically. High white limestone cliffs are now the terrain. Again, caves, turquoise waters and remote white sandy beaches make the paddling a really impressive experience! There is another break for snorkeling, swimming and lunch before continuing for the last stretch.
