Gortyna is a municipality and an archaeological site in Crete, 45 km away from the modern capital Heraklion. It is located in the valley of Messara in the south of the Psiloritis mountain. The northern part is mostly flat, while in the south the mountain range of Asterousia dominates leading to beautiful beaches on the Libyan Sea.

Among these beaches are the fine settlements Lentas, Geros Kampos and Dytikos, while an area of outstanding natural beauty is the gorge of Tripiti which leads to the homonymous beach. On the southern shores of the municipality, in the settlement Lentas, lie the ruins of the ancient city Levin.
