Evangelistria Church at Chora
Exploring Tinos Sailing Holidays area
The Evangelistria Church is also known as Panagia Megalochari which means Virgin Mary with all graces. The church is located on a hill above the Chora of Tinos.
Many visitors cover the distance to the church on their knees as a promise to Virgin Mary. The path is very rough so there is a carpet from the port to the entrance of the church for those who want to walk the path on their knees. Pilgrims leave their offerings on the icon which they bestow their wishes, usually for good health.
The icon of the church is considered to be miraculous. It depicts Virgin Mary kneeling with her head bent in prayer. It is mentioned to be older than the Byzantine period and a work of the Apostle and Evangelist Lucas.Within the walls of the church are various museums and galleries. On the left, there is a gallery of religious art and one with Byzantine icons. Upstairs there is also a sculpture gallery.
