The beach of Rethymno is 12 km long and starts through the city and ends in Scaleta, which operate large hotels located outside the city to the east side. It is a cosmopolitan beach with plenty of shops to suit all tastes. The length of the beach throughout is of fine brown sand. The piece of the beach located in Rethymnon is very crowded during the summer months, but as you go from the city is much quieter. Also, the beach of Rethymnon in the city is very well organized with a large number of lifeguards who work from 10am until 5pm and update and watch the world from any risks. On the beach in the city and outside it, especially hotels, rent umbrellas and chairs for those who visit the beach. In this beach you can do water sports at one of the pieces of the package. Beware of sea currents.
Arkadiou Street, or Sabbionara, was during Venetian era but also today one of the most important streets of the urban fabric of the city. Lying in the heart of modern Rethymnon, it combines the oriental features of the Turkish period with Renaissance-style Venetian architecture.
The Missiria is actually a suburb of Rethymno, within walking distance from the city center, just 3 km to the east and on the long sandy beach. Access from Rethymnon is very easy with regular and frequent bus, taxi and rented or private cars and motorcycles.
Episkopis beach is located 12 km west of Rethymno and is a great sandy beach, several kilometers long that is affected by the wind. There are parts of the beach that are organized and have cafes, there are large chunks of the beach that are not organized where you can put your towel.
