
Sailing Holidays in Istiaia-Aidipsos
Istiaia, the seat of the municipality Istiaia-Aidipsos, and the old capital in North Evia, remains until today its largest city and commercial center. There is multitude of taverns at the outskirts which operate all year round and offer a variety of delicious dishes. Among the attractions, is the Hunting Club’s Museum of Natural History.
The area of Aidipsos has wonderful beaches, beautiful alpine forests and various monasteries as well as many venues for eating out. The mineral springs of Aidipsos have been famous for their healing properties since the 4th century B.C. The Ancient Greek writers and philosophers such as Aristotle, Strabo, Plutarch, make many references to these springs. In Aidipsos the mineral spring water springs from natural wells as deep as 3,000 meters at temperatures of 75-85 C.
The coastal city of Oreoi has a picturesque harbor, which has recently been expanded for medium and small vessels and has a pedestrian zone with numerous cafes and restaurants along the quay by the sea. At the beginning of the summer, the sailing club organizes games while the local community plans a series of cultural events and happenings.
Lihada is built on a hilly ground with magnificent views of all the seaside towns at Maliakos Gulf. The church of Panagia Lihadas, built on the highest point of the village, has historical and religious interest. The miraculous image of Our Lady which stands imposingly beside the temple deserves the visitors’ attention.
