The port of Chíos is the principal port of the island and it is formed at its eastern shores. It consists of the outer anchorage and the artificial port. The citadel, as well as the old walled town, is located to the northern part of the port. The port is protected by two moles.
The south mole protects the port from the east winds. It initially extends to the southwest for approximately 144 m. A small port for small vessels is formed at the inner part of south mole, which is protected from the winds by a pier that is set to the southwest, with a total length of 75 m and a total width of 5 m. A floating pier, which is 54 m long and 2.5 m wide lies at a distance of 75 m to the south and is parallel to the pier mentioned above. From this point, the mole extends to the northeast for approximately 125 m.
The north mole that protects the port from the northeast winds consists of three parts. The first part is quayed (at the inside) and extends to the southeast for approximately 240 m. The second part moves towards the southeast for approximately 150 m. At this point, it extends, through a curve, to the east and southeast for approximately 180 m. There is a small stronghold located at the middle of the north mole, with a 17-meter-high mast exhibiting a fixed red light. The opening of the port’s entrance is approximately 150 m.
The shores of the port are quayed apart from the outer parts of the moles. The depths at its entrance are approximately 9 m and they decrease as we move to the port’s inner part. A 130-meter-long quay is located at the port’s northeastern corner, with nearby depths of approximately 3 m.
