Theater of Messene is an exceptional building and an excellent example of the theaters and amphitheaters of the Roman period. It was built about 3rd to 2nd century B.C. and is one of the greatest antiquities in Greece.During the early Byzantine era, the theater was converted to a “quarry”.The Theatre of Messene was reopened in August 2013 after 1700 years. The restoration of the ancient theatre lasted more than 20 years. 2,500 spectators were seated at the theatre andafter the complete restoration, its capacity is estimated to 5,000 seats, which is half the capacity it had in antiquity. In 2014 Theater of Messene hosted an event of Athens and Epidaurus Festival.
