The harbor of Loutra is on the NE side of the island and is somewhat more yacht-friendly than the main ferry harbor. Although the prevailing NE winds blow down into the bay and cause a pronounced swell, the harbor, situated at the extreme W end of the bay, escapes much of the worst.
The harbor of Merichas lies on the west side of the island, five miles south of the cape of Kefalos at its northern tip. The main harbor used by the ferry boats, Merichas lies at the SE end of the homonymous bay and offers reasonable protection from the meltemi (the Etesians), which mainly gusts here from the NE.
Loutra is a newly established summer resort attracting visitors and locals alike due to the thermal springs that give the water a distinct therapeutic value. Well sheltered from the winds this enchanting sandy and pebbled beach offers a popular spot, where swimmers can dive in the warm emerald waters, relish local specialties at the nearby taverns or drink an iced called coffee while enjoying the serenity of their surroundings.
