Ierapetra is the most populous town in the regional unit of Lasithi, and the fourth town of Crete. It is nicknamed "bride of the Libyan Sea" because of its position as the only town on the south coast of Crete. The city’s temperature will hardly ever go below 12°C.
Ierapetra is well developed to meet the needs and preference of all. Beyond a doubt, its winning card is the volcanic little island of Chryssi, which will take your breath away with its stunning natural beauty.
Get to it by boat on a day trip; an one-hour sail to the area of Vougiou Mati will take you to a string of more or less secluded coves, pristine beaches and dunes with gold and white sand, turquoise crystal clear waters, but also acres and acres of forests of rare cedar trees.
Ahlia sandy beach located 15 kilometers east of Ierapetra, in front of the homonymous small settlement, well protected from the winds that blow in the region. The visitor can enjoy the sea and the sun, enjoying all the amenities of the relatively well-organized beach (sunbeds, umbrellas, sea sports etc) without the crowds.
Pachia Ammou pebbled beach is located 20 km southeast from Agios Nikolaos, on the main road leading from Agios Nikolaos to Sitia and Ierapetra, right next to the homonymous beautiful coastal village. Beach is not protected from the winds and is for the lovers of big waves.
The beach Koutsouras with dark gray pebbles lying stretched out on its back with crystal and blue-green waters. Located 55 km southeast from Agios Nikolaos and 20 kilometers east of Ierapetra, in front of the seaside village and is well protected from the winds.
Beautiful bay with fine sand and crystal waters 10 kilometers east of Ierapetra. The tiny sandy bay of Agia Fotia (Holy Fire) holds perhaps the most beautiful beach bar of the county with latin, cuban, and acid jazz sounds, which makes it very popular among young people.
The secluded and very quiet beach Moni Kapsa is located 68 km southeast from Agios Nikolaos, 33 km east of Ierapetra and 10 km east from Makrigialos and are not sheltered from the wind. Actually it is a few consecutive coves with pebbles and some sand that will help you find your own to enjoy the crystal clear sea and peace.
Small pebbled beach in front of the camping 'Gournia' is located 19 km southeast from Agios Nikolaos on the main road leading from Agios Nikolaos to Sitia and Ierapetra, after Istro before the Pachia Ammos. Beach is well protected from the winds in a small cove.
The islet of Chryssi (official name) or Gaidouronisi is located 8 miles south of Ierapetra on the Libyan Sea and is uninhabited, but has very nice beaches and great history. One of the best beaches in Greece, with beautiful golden sand, full of small shells and gorgeous turquoise waters.
