Sestri Levante lies partly on Promontorio di Sestri, a round wooded promontory joined to the mainland by a narrow isthmus, and partly on the small plain at the mouth of Torrente Gromolo. A series of five rubble breakwaters have been constructed along the shore between the W part of the town and the mouth of the river. Anchorage can be obtained in depths of about 13 m, mud, 180 m NNW of the mole head. Small vessels can obtain anchorage in depths of about 9 m E of the mole, remaining clear of vessels moored to it.
