Kalamaki beach is a long sandy beach of Laganas bay. The beach at Kalamaki has a very fine sand and crystal-clear waters. It's a well organized beach with restaurants, cafes and shops. The beach is 8 km from Zakynthos town.
Kalamaki beach and the hole area of Laganas bay is one of the most important shelters for the endangered species of Caretta-caretta in Greece. The greatest number of the sea turtles Careta-Careta gathers, every summer, in the island of Zakynthos to lay their eggs in the busiest bay of Laganas. This is the most important reproductive place of Careta-Careta in the Mediterranean.
Laganas bay has the longest beaches in Greece (5km long) than any other place in the Mediterranean. 1600 nests are created in six beaches of Laganas. Due to the danger of extinction of Careta-Careta, the bay is under strict regulations and it is protected with international agreements and laws.
In the beaches of incubation there are numerous signs, which inform the visitors about the protective measures of the egg laying of Careta-Careta.
The period of egg laying is in the summer months, where female turtles going out on the beach at night and by digging in the sand they "hide" their eggs in a depth of half a meter, creating nests.
