Sailing Holidays in Samaria gorge

Samaria is the most important gorge in Greece. It is located in west Crete, in the White Mountains. It is the longest gorge in Europe with a length of 18 km. The gorge starts at Xyloskalo and ends at Agia Roumeli village. Walking the Samaria footpath is an amazing experience.

It is the most walked path in Greece and is very well signposted all along its length. Everyone can do down the gorge, but visitors have to be prepared for a 4 to 8 hours walk. Also it is impossible to get lost in the gorge, because there are always many people around..

The abundance of water, the topography and the climate, make Samaria a paradise for wildlife. There is a huge variety of plant species from old trees, to wild flowers and herbs, some of them very special like the Cretan maple, orchids, dittany and many others.

Also, rare species of birds like vultures and eagles, and mammals like the Cretan ibex, known as Kri-Kri, live here. The entire are is protected under international law, because of the unique animals live here, as Kri-Kri.
