No-one is actually certain when the caves of Matala were created. Current thinking is that they are Roman or Early Christian tombs. Some of the caves contain beds and windows revealing a different purpose: historians believe that some of them were used as homes long ago -and especially from “Flower Children”, who came to Matala. Hippies came to Matala and they found made homes in the caves. The caves are protected by the Archaeological Service and nobody is allowed to live or spend the night.
